Cervical Loop Electrosurgery Basic Equipment

1. Electrosurgical generator with options for "blended" outputs (cut and coagulation).

2. Patient return electrode (adhesive) or "antenna plate" (depends on model).

3. Handpiece for tips.

4. Foot actuator or finger-control on handpiece.

5. Variety of round and square loops of different sizes. Rarely need one deeper than 10 mm.

6. 3 to 5.0 mm ball electrode for fulgeration and coagulation. Cleaning pad (gauze also works).

7. Smoke evacuator.

8. Specula with fume evacuator tube system.

9. Local anesthetics.

10. Infiltration set-up.

11. Colposcope - "Always look before you LEEP."

12. 5 % acetic acid for colposcopy.

13. Lugol's solution for highlighting the transformation zone.

14. Monsel's paste (evaporated and thickened) or AstrinGYN (tm).

15. Pickups or forceps to remove specimens.

16. Ring forceps with 4x4 gauze, cotton balls.

17. Large swabs (rectal swabs or "Texas Q-tips") and small swabs (Q-tips).

18. Pap smear samplers if cytology anticipated (uncommon).

19. Endocervical sampling device.

20. Post procedure instruction sheet.

21. Have available 4-0 chromic suture with long needle holders.

22. Consider vaginal sidewall refractors and/or latex glove finger over end of the speculum.

23. Operator may wear glasses or protective goggles and should use a micropore face mask.

24. Sample bottles with fixative of choice (formalin, Zenker's, etc.).
