Coumadin is indicated for the prophylazis and/or treatment of venous thrombosis and its extension, and pulmonary embolism.
Coumadin is indicated for the prophylazis and/or treatment of the thromboembolic complications associated with atrial fibrilliation and/or cardiac valve replacement.
Coumadin is indicated to reduce the risk of death, recurrent myocardial infarction, andd thromboembolic events such as stroke or systemic embolization after myocardial infarction.
The benefits of oral anticoagulant therapy in rducing the occurrence of thromboembolic events in patients with atrial fibrillation has been confirmed by a number of major clinical trials. A pooled analysis of five major clinical trials demonstrated a 68% risk reduction of thromboembolic stroke in patients receiving warfarin (INR 2.0-3.0). The annual fate of major hemorrhage was 1.0% for the control group and 1.3% for the warfarin group.
Coumadin is contraindicated in:
Patients where the risk of hemorrhage outweighs the potential clincial benefits of therapy
Pregnancy
Alcoholism/drug abuse
Unsupervised dementia/psychosis
