Images of Our Past

The LSUHSC-S Archives documents the history of the Louisiana State University
Health Sciences Center at Shreveport, as well as the history of medicine in Shreveport
and Louisiana. Holdings include photographs, correspondence, newspaper clippings, reports,
and other primary source materials. Our website will feature items from the archives that
highlight important events of the health sciences center's history.
This month we feature the first freshman class admitted to the LSU Medical
School in 1969. Click here to learn more about this historic event.
New Service: Wireless Printing Available

Wireless printing is now provided in the library for faculty, staff, and students using their own Windows or
Mac laptops. Documents to be printed are sent to the GoPrint charging station in the library computer lab and
may be retrieved using a prepaid copy card.

The Library is pleased to present Basic PowerPoint
on Monday, November 10 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and Advanced PowerPoint on Tuesday,
November 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Both sessions will be held in the Library, Room 1-419.

National Medical Librarians Month

Avast matey! You can unlock a treasure of knowledge at the Medical Library during October.
Join us as we celebrate National Medical Librarians Month with a treasure hunt. Look on
the home page each week for the key that will lead you to the treasure chest with the clue
to open your own treasure. Entrants are eligible to win great loot like flash drives,
textbooks, copy cards, and more. Contest closes October 29th, with winners announced
October 31st.

To attend the Hoover Watercolor Society’s annual Juried Small Painting Show
reception in the Library on Sunday, September 28, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
The public is invited to this event, and valet parking will be available.
The artwork will continue to be on display in the Library until November 3.
The Hoover Watercolor Society is a private, non-profit organization founded
in 1958 as the Shreveport Watercolor Society. The Society’s goals are to
provide members with opportunities to exhibit their artwork in judged
exhibitions and to educate the public in fine watercolor art. More information

CINAHL

CINAHL, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature,
is no longer available via Ovid. EbscoHost is now the only provider of the
CINAHL database. Although the interface is different, the data is the same.
If you need assistance setting up your preferences,
creating your accounts, or taking advantage of any of the enhancements available via
EbscoHost, please email your question or phone 675-5477.

LaRHIX Provides DynaMed

LSUHSC-S faculty, staff, and students now have access to DynaMed,
a point-of-care database that provides clinically organized summaries
of almost 3000 topics. This access was made possible through funding
from the Louisiana Rural Health Information Exchange (LaRHIX), a network
formed by the Louisiana Rural Hospital Coalition and LSUHSC-S to support
Louisiana's health information technology initiatives in rural areas.
LSUHSC-S hosts and technically supports many aspects of the LaRHIX network
and also serves as the tertiary care site for LaRHIX's rural hospitals.
LaRHIX Executive Director Donald E. Hines, M.D., collaborated
with the LSUHSC-S Medical Library to provide access to DynaMed for LSUHSC-S,
E.A. Conway Medical Center in Monroe, and Huey P. Long Hospital in Pineville,
as well as the forty-one LaRHIX member hospitals. Access will also be available
for LSUHSC-S alumni soon.

Art in the Library

The Medical Library is pleased to showcase the photographic art of
Ron E. Mills, a Shreveport artist with a perspective uniquely his own.
His photographs of nature, animals, architecture, and people reveal the
individual beauty and personality of each subject. Inspired by God’s creativity,
Ron is eager to share his work with as many people as possible. Sharing this
excitement is what keeps him searching for ordinary things to present in an
un-ordinary way. Ron has been producing these unique photographs for the past
three years and his work hangs in private collections and galleries throughout
the South and the Northeast. Ron’s show, consisting of 35 distinctive images,
will be on display through September 24th. More of his work can be seen on his

NIH Public Access Policy

Effective April 7, 2008, all published papers funded by the National
Institutes of Health (NIH) must be deposited in
PubMed Central,
a free online archive of full-text biomedical journal articles,
upon acceptance for publication. Confused or concerned?

Re-carpeting has begun on the library's first floor. Both computer labs
will be closed for several days. During this period, computing facilities
on the library's first floor will not be available. We apologize for any
inconvenience this causes and hope to have the computer labs available
again on or about Thursday.
New Database: DynaMed

Thanks to a collaborative project between the medical library and the
Louisiana Rural Health Information Exchange (LARHIX),
LSUHSC-S and the 41 LARHIX hospitals have gained access to
DynaMed,
an online clinical reference tool intended for use primarily at the point of care.
It includes clinically-organized summaries for nearly 3,000 topics. Updated daily,
DynaMed monitors the content of over 500 medical journals, evaluating each article
for its clinical relevance and scientific validity.

Library re-carpeting project
(6/12/2008)
A project to recarpet all three floors of the library will begin on
Thursday, July 3rd. The contractors will be working in the library
from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. everyday for six weeks. Since this will
require shifting of the book and print journal collections, there will
unfortunately be some noise, and parts of the library may be temporarily
inaccessible. However, we will attempt to minimize the inconvenience as
much as possible. We appreciate your patience during this project. If you
have any questions, please call the library's Director, Marianne Comegys (x5-5450).

African American Surgeons Exhibit

The Medical Library and the Office of Multicultural Affairs are
co-hosting an exhibition entitled "Opening Doors: Contemporary
African American Surgeons." This traveling exhibition, developed
and produced by the National Library of Medicine and the Reginald
F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture,
is a celebration of the contributions of African American academic
surgeons to medicine and medical education. Featured are the
achievements of four contemporary pioneer African American
surgeons and educators who exemplify excellence in their fields.
This fascinating exhibit, on the first floor of the Medical
Library, will be on display from May 7 - July 28.
MKSAP 14

The Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program, 14th ed. (MKSAP)
is now available on one computer in each of the library's two
computer labs. It can be used on Workstation 03 in the larger
lab (room 1-417), and on Workstation 40 in room 1-419.
Access to Ovid

Walk-in visitors to the library can now access Ovid without
the need for an LSUMC-MASTER account. Look for the
"OvidWeb Autologin" icon on the public computers
adjacent to the circulation desk on the first floor of the library.
LSUHSC-S Medical Library Evidence Alert Page

To assist in patient care, the library now offers Evidence Alert blog that
highlights evidence-based guidelines, reports, and reviews. You will receive
notification when major guidelines, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and/or
major reviews are released by national and international organizations.

Gummy Worm Contest

New OVID user interface
(1/31/2008)
On Monday Feb 4th, Ovid will launch OvidSP, its new user interface.
With a simplified, cleaner appearance, OvidSP is a significant revision
to the Ovid platform. It addresses enhancement requests made by users over the
last several years. To use the new version of Ovid, Windows users will need
either Internet Explorer 6.1 or greater, or Firefox 1.5 or greater. Mac users
will need to use Firefox, as OvidSP does not support Safari.
Assistance submitting manuscripts to PubMed Central

A Skill Kit
for the NIH Manuscript Submission System is now available online.
It includes online slide presentations that demonstrate the process
of submitting a manuscript. This will assist researchers in complying
with the NIH requirement that manuscripts for papers resulting from
NIH-funded research be submitted to the National Library of Medicine's
PubMed Central archive.
More content and a new name coming to InfoPOEMS/InfoRetriever

The InfoPOEMS and InfoRetriever evidence-based medicine database is
undergoing significant expansion. EBM Guidelines, a concise
collection of 950+ Practice Guidelines, 3,000+ Evidence Summaries,
and 1,000+ images, and e-Essential Evidence, a collection
provides highly structured, evidence-based summaries for primary
care physicians providing first contact care, will be added in the
first quarter of 2008. Reflecting the broadened scope of the database,
InfoPOEMS/InfoRetriever will be renamed Essential Evidence Plus
as of February 1st, 2008.

Central archiving mandatory in 2008

The recently passed Consolidated Appropriations Act includes a change in
policy relating to archiving of manuscripts resulting from research funded
through NIH grants in 2008. All peer-reviewed manuscripts that result from
research funded in whole or in part by direct-costs from NIH grants must be
deposited in PubMed Central no later than 12 months following the official
date of publication. Details can be found at

Nature backfiles

The Library recently purchased access to backfiles of the electronic journal Nature.
This makes it possible to access articles from Nature back to 1987.
Journal changes for 2008

The Library is in the process of implementing journal changes for 2008.
Twenty-four electronic journals are being added to the collection.
In addition, 47 journals that have been received in print are changing to
electronic. More information on individual titles will be forthcoming as access becomes available.
