Librarians Participate in National Meeting

The Medical Library Association (MLA) recently held its annual meeting in Seattle, Washington.  Several LSU Health Shreveport librarians participated in the conference:

Will Olmstadt, Interim Library Director, attended a Leadership Institute as part of the National Library of Medicine/Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries Leadership Fellows Program. Mr. Olmstadt is one of five health sciences librarians selected to participate in this program, which prepares emerging leaders for director positions in academic health sciences libraries.

Julia M. Esparza, Head of User Education and Outreach Services, received the Lucretia W. McClure Excellence in Education Award for her skills in teaching, curriculum development, mentoring, research, and educational leadership. Ms. Esparza presided over the meeting of the Hospital Libraries Section as its incoming chair.

David Duggar, Head of the Library Liaison Program, received the Professional Recognition Award for Technological Innovation from the Hospital Libraries Section. This award recognized his efforts to promote the section’s website.

The theme of the conference was “Dream, Dare, Do,” and our librarians contributed programming that reflected that theme.  Montie’ Dobbins, Head of User Access Services, moderated a session on “Dreaming of a Healthier Community: Librarians Doing Research.”  Montie’ Dobbins and David Duggar presented a poster on “Librarians Dreamed of Participating in a Mock Mass Casualty Incident: Did They Dare to Do It?” Co-presenter of the poster was Paula Craig, librarian at Northwestern State University College of Nursing. David Duggar also presented the poster “Dreaming to Learn the Socious Platform:  The Hospital Libraries Section Dares to Follow the Educational Media and Technologies Section.”  His co-presenters were Ellen Aaronson from California and Lisa Marks from Arizona.
