Librarian to Receive Prestigious Award

Julie Esparza, Head of User Education & Outreach, is the recipient of the 2017 Lucretia W. McClure Excellence in Education Award.  This award, which is presented by the Medical Library Association (MLA), honors outstanding librarians who demonstrate skills in teaching, curriculum development, mentoring, research, or educational leadership.  She will receive her award at MLA’s annual conference in May.   Ms. Esparza received another major MLA award, the Estelle Brodman Award for the Academic Medical Librarian of the Year, in 2014. She is only the second person in the history of the organization to win both of these prestigious awards.

Ms. Esparza’s involvement in education at LSU Health Shreveport includes serving on and currently chairing the Continuing Medical Education Committee.  She has been involved in the Medical School curriculum through the SACS-QEP “Translating Research into Practice” initiative.  In addition, she has mentored high school and undergraduate students each summer through the programs of the Office of Multicultural Affairs.  She has also been awarded grant funding to educate the community on healthcare issues.  Through funding she received from the South Central Region of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, LSU Health Shreveport will host a symposium on “Human Papillomavirus Risk and Prevention:  Protecting Future Generations” on March 25.

Librarians Published in Professional Journal

The latest issue of Journal of Hospital Librarianship contains an article written by Barbara Reilly, Interlibrary Loan Librarian, and recently retired Library Director Dixie Jones.  Their article, "Effects of a Change in Hospital Affiliation on an Academic Medical Center Library,” reports on the privatization of University Health and its impact on the Library.  They describe how the Library continues to provide services and vital resources to affiliates of University Health as well as LSU Health Shreveport.
