Pet Therapy at the Library

Fifty students, faculty and staff gathered in the library last week to escape holiday stress with some furry friends. Four therapy dogs and their handlers participated. Facebook has more photos.



The library staff wishes everyone a happy, healthy, safe holiday! Library hours are as follows:
December 21-23 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
December 24-27 Closed
December 28-30 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
December 31 Closed
January 1-3 Closed
Normal hours resume on Monday, January 4, 2016



Librarian Elected to Head State Organization

Congratulations to Julie Esparza, Head of User Education & Outreach, on her recent election as President of the Health Sciences Library Association of Louisiana (HSLAL). She succeeds Deidra Woodson, Metadata & Digitization Librarian, whose term as President just ended.  HSLAL includes librarians from academic health science centers and hospitals throughout the state.


You Helped Someone See!

During the month of November, the Health Sciences Library, the Ophthalmology Interest Group, and the Shreveport Red River Lions Club held an Eyeglass Drive. Thanks to all of you who donated your old glasses and eyeglass cases. We received 73 pairs of glasses and 50 cases! Now the Lions Club will clean the glasses, sort them by prescription strength, and package them in the cases for distribution. We appreciate your help to change lives one pair at a time!


“Paws” to Pet a Dog

If you need a break from studying or from the stress of the holidays, come by the Library on Friday, December 11, at 2:00 p.m. Therapy dogs will be waiting for you!


Library’s first ever “Win An Exclusive Study Room For Finals Week” Facebook contest is a success!

Mai VuCongratulations to Mai Vu, the Library’s first ever “Win An Exclusive Study Room For Finals Week” contest winner! And, thank you to all who participated in the Library’s contest by liking, sharing, and joining our Facebook event. We had such an amazing response, and we will definitely be doing it again next semester. In the meantime, stay tuned to our Facebook page for more exciting contests, events, and announcements.


Academy of Health Information Professionals

Lexi BrackettCongratulations to Lexi Brackett, Reference Librarian, who was recently approved for Provisional membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP), the professional development and career recognition program of the Medical Library Association.  Ms. Brackett was a recipient of the AHIP First-Time Applicant Award from the South Central Chapter of the Medical Library Association (SCC/MLA).  This award, which covers the cost of Academy membership for first-time applicants, was recently established by SCC/MLA to encourage chapter members to participate in the credentialing process.   Other faculty members at the LSU Health Shreveport Library with AHIP credentialing include at the Senior level, Betty Tucker, Assistant Director of Technical Services; and at the Distinguished level,  Dixie Jones, Library Director; Will Olmstadt, Library Associate Director; Julia Esparza, Head of User Education & Outreach; and David Duggar, Head of the Liaison Program.
