Sage Knowledge Collection Now Available

The Health Sciences Library is a member of a statewide consortium, LOUIS: The Louisiana Library Network.  Under the direction of the Board of Regents, LOUIS has implemented a project called “Affordable Learning LOUISiana,” which is focused on reducing students’ costs for instructional materials.  As part of this initiative, LOUIS is providing all member libraries with access to e-books in the Sage Knowledge Collection until July 31, 2018.  At that time, funds will be allocated for us to purchase perpetual access to e-books in the collection that have been adopted as textbooks.  The collection includes 370 e-books on health-related topics.

Shreveport Featured in National Exhibit on Global Health

Against the Odds: Making a Difference in Global Health is a traveling exhibit that is on display in the Health Sciences Library until September 9, 2017. This exhibit, created by the National Library of Medicine, explores the history of international health concerns and the activist groups addressing these issues. The Shreveport chapter of an AIDS activist group is highlighted in this exhibit that has been displayed across the country.

In conjunction with this display, the Library is hosting Global Health in a Changing World, a grand rounds lecture, that will be presented by L. Keith Scott, MD, MSc, FCCM, on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at noon in the Library computer lab 1-417.

The New Old Master is in the Library

Local artist Darrell Chitty is nationally recognized as the “New Old Master” for his combined use of modern technology and stylistic techniques of the greatest artists of all time, and his unique artwork is on display in the Health Sciences Library until October. The exhibit, including both photographs and paintings, demonstrates the depth of his talent. To learn more about this twice named Louisiana portrait artist of the year, visit his website at

A Reminder about Appropriate Use of Library Electronic Resources

The Health Sciences Library negotiates and agrees to licenses for our electronic resources. These licenses permit certain uses of the e-resources and prohibit other uses.  In general, you may download and share resources or full-text (such as PDF downloads of articles) with other LSU Health Shreveport or University Health personnel.

The following uses of our resources are usually prohibited:

  • Sharing downloads with colleagues not affiliated with LSU Health Shreveport
  • Systematically running web crawlers to download copyrighted full-text content or download excessive numbers of bibliographic citations
  • Posting full-text or copyrighted content from databases to e-mail lists or worldwide file-sharing utilities such as Sci-Hub
  • Sharing usernames and passwords with colleagues not affiliated with LSU Health Shreveport

Publishers patrol electronic resource usage for potential violations of licensing agreements. Such violations could result in the publisher discontinuing access to the electronic resource for all of LSU Health Shreveport and University Health.

These policies are certainly not intended to deter using Library electronic resources. However, these restrictions are part of the regulatory environment in which we work. We are happy to answer questions if you are unsure about using Library online resources properly.
