PDA Free Medical Applications

For each PDA application, you will need to download the client software to your PC, and then upload the client to your handheld.

These links allow access to freeware or shareware for PDAs. When you access these websites, please understand that it is independent from the LSUHSC-S Library and the Library has no control over the content on the site. ATP III Cholesterol Management Tool Palm
An interactive guideline tool used to assist the clinician in implementing the ATP III Cholesterol Guidelines at the point of care.

Clinical Guidelines from the American College of Cardiology Foundation
Palm and PocketPC
In the ACC's ongoing effort to use technology for training and education, they have adapted many clinical guidelines for download to your PDA. Some guidelines include Stable/Unstable Angina, Valvular Heart Disease, Atrial Fibrillation, and more.

Electronic Preventive Services Selector Palm and PocketPC
This PDA application and online guide identifies clinical preventive services for screening, counseling, and preventive medication based on the patient's age, sex, and pregnancy status. It reflects current recommendations of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) and can be used as a clinical tool for delivering appropriate services.

Immunization Schedule 2007 Palm and PocketPC
Childhood and Adult Immunization Schedules are available from the CDC for download to PDA.

National Guidelines Clearinghouse Palm
Comprehensive database of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and related documents. All National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC) Guideline Summaries are available in a text format downloadable to the Palm-based PDA.

National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
Palm and PocketPC
Use this resource for Asthma treatment guidelines, a cholesterol management tool, and a BMI calculator, and others.



Databases

MEDLINE Database on Tap Palm and PocketPC (requires wireless)
A free application which supports retrieval of MEDLINE® citations from your PDA through a wireless connection. MD on Tap supports several search limits, email of citations, and clustered results.

PubMed for Handhelds Palm and PocketPC (requires wireless)
PubMed for Handhelds is a free web application that allows health care professionals to search Pubmed, read journal abstracts and search via a PICO feature. This is a product of the National Library of Medicine.

USDA Nutrient Database Palm
This database provides detailed analysis of the nutrient values of many common foods, including calories, protein, carbohydrates, total fat, and total fiber. Select “Users Guide” for loading instructions.

ACP Bioterrorism Resource Palm
American College of Physicians offers a Decision Support Tool to assist with Smallpox, Inhalation Anthrax, Cutaneous Anthrax, and Chemical Terrorism.

Diagnosaurus Palm and PocketPC
This resource is popular among medical students. This free application includes 1000 differential diagnoses where you can search by disease, system, or organ system. You will need to register, download client software, and install the application to your PDA.

ePocrates Palm and PocketPC
ePocrates offers the Rx drug resource, Mobile CME, and MedTools free for the Palm. Some of these are available free for the Pocket PC. Registration is required for the free download.



Directories & Dictionaries

DIRLINE Palm and PocketPC (requires wireless)
DIRLINE (Directory of Information Resources Online) is the National Library of Medicine's online database containing location and descriptive information about a wide variety of information resources including organizations, research resources, projects, and databases concerned with health and biomedicine. These information resources fall into many categories including federal, state, and local government agencies; information and referral centers; professional societies; self-help groups and voluntary associations; academic and research institutions and their programs; information systems and research facilities. This version is designed for handheld devices with wireless Internet connectivity. Limited graphics and simple screen layout are used for display on small screens.

Medical Eponyms Palm and PocketPC
A list of 1,520 common and obscure medical eponyms (e.g., Rovsing's sign, Virchow's node) with descriptions.



Medical Calculators

Archimedes Calculator Palm and PocketPC
A free medical calculator from Skyscape including 70 preprogrammed formulas with specialty areas of Cardiology, Pharmacology, Hematology, FEN, Pediatrics, Pulmonary and Renal. Registration is required for the free download.

EBM Calculator Palm and PocketPC
The EBM Calculator is designed to calculate relevant statistics for Diagnostic studies, Prospective Studies, Case Control Studies, and Randomized Control Trials (RCT).

MedCalc
Palm and PocketPC
MedCalc can calculate more than 70 common medical equations, including anion gap (plasma and urine), Aa02 gradient, Body Mass Index, Creatinine clearance, and many more.

Pneumonia Severity Index Calculator Palm and PocketPC
This application is available through the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). It is designed to determine a patient’s risk class for adverse medical outcomes.

STAT Growth Charts
Palm
This is the 2000 CDC Growth Chart revision available for your handheld. Input height, weight, sex, and head circumference to calculate growth percentiles, z-scores, and BMI for age.

STAT Hypertension Palm
Currently in beta testing, this full-text JNC 7 coder is available free for the Palm.

GASNet PDA Palm
This resource includes selections from the Global Textbook of Anesthesiology, Pediatric syndromes, and Spanish to English phrasebook.

Healthy Palm Pilot Palm
This site is sponsored by pdaMD.com. Use this resource to search for free medical calculators, obesity guideline tools, etc. by using the “advanced search,” “search by file type,” and select “freeware.”

MerckMedicus Palm and PocketPC
This resource provides a wealth of information. A few selections included in the full download are: The Merck Manual, Pocket Guide to Diagnositic Tests, Medline Journal Abstracts plus news and online CME. Registration is required but is free.



News

AvantGo Palm and PocketPC
AvantGo allows you to take selected web sites off the Internet and store them in your handheld computer. You have access to "channels" of interest. You will need to download free client software and create a login for this resource.

BioMed Central
Palm and PocketPC
You can receive biological and medical news from The Scientist as well as recent research article abstracts from BioMed Central. AvantGo's free software will automatically download news articles and research abstracts from BioMed Central when you synchronize your PDA.

FDA CFR Clinical Trials Palm
The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) is kept up to date by the individual issues of the Federal Register. Each volume of the CFR contains amendments published in the Federal Register since the latest revision of that volume. Source citations for the regulations are referred to by volume number and page number.

Antibiotic Guide Palm
The Johns Hopkins POC-IT (Point of Care Information Technology) Antibiotic (ABX) Guide is a handheld-ready adaptation of the online ABX Guide. It is optimized for use at the point of care and for each handheld device. Registration is required to load this free application.



Toxicology

TOXNET
(requires wireless)
Search interface for TOXNET now available for personal digital assistants.  These versions are designed for handheld devices with Internet connectivity. Limited graphics and simple screen layout are used for display on small screens.

WISER - Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders Palm and Pocket PC (requires wireless)
First responders can use this resource in hazardous material incidents. WISER provides information on hazardous substances, substance identification support, physical characteristics, human health information, and containment and suppression advices. This resource was developed by Specialized Information Services (SIS) Division of the National Library of Medicine (NLM).

The MobiPocket Reader is a universal eBook and eNews Reader for Palm OS and PocketPC.

PICOmaker Palm
This application will help you formulate and store clinical questions for research. The PICO formula includes the following parameters: Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome. This PDA resource was developed by the University of Alberta Libraries.
